Militant killed in ongoing encounter in Indian Kashmir

A militant was gunned down by security forces in an ongoing encounter in Shopian district of Indian Kashmir, said local media reports on Wednesday

The encounter comes days two days before India marks its 69th Republic Day. The encounter ensued after security forces cordoned off and launched a search operation in Chaigund village following information about presence of militants in the area.

Indian security forces are battling to contain a separatist insurgency now in its 28th year. Violence has declined since the early 2000s, when thousands died each year, but disillusionment and anger against Indian rule is widespread, and the separatist revolt is now largely homegrown. India accuses Pakistan of backing separatist fighters – a charge Islamabad denies.
