Putin meets Modi in New Delhi for annual summit talks

Russian President Vladimir Putin met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (October 5) in Hyderabad House in New Delhi for annual bilateral summit talks.

The two countries are expected to sign a deal worth more than $5 billion on the delivery of Russian S-400 anti-aircraft missiles following talks between the two leaders.

India plans to use the arms as both a deterrent against China and to gain an edge over traditional rival, Pakistan, as they are able to track and shoot down combat aircraft, even stealth planes, at unprecedented ranges.

More than 80 percent of India’s military equipment were of Soviet origin during the days of the Cold War, but New Delhi has been looking to diversify its weaponry. It closed $15 billion worth of arms deals with the United States in the past decade.
