Jonathan Martin hosts brunch for black journalists in Houston

ABC 13, FOX 26, KHOU 11, KPRC 2 and NTV Houston were all represented at the brunch

FOX 26 evening news anchor Jonathan Martin held a brunch for 20 African-Americans in media, that work in the Houston market.

“I think it’s great for us to have this light moment to get together, and to get to know each other a little better,” said Martin as he thanked everyone for coming.

The brunch was held at Benjy’s in Rice Village, a trendy restaurant with a very intimate setting which was suited for the occasion.

Producers, on-air radio and TV personalities to PR specialists gathered for an afternoon of fellowship and good conversation.

One of the biggest topics that was discussed was the Houston Association of Black Journalists and how to engage it’s members and grow the chapter.

The National Association of Black Journalist’s annual conference will be held in Miami FL in August. Houston will NABJ’s 2021 conference.

Reporter turned Houston mayor press secretary, Mary Benton and longtime news veteran Isiah Carey from FOX 26 were in attendance. Other primetime talents present included such as Syan Rhodes, KPRC 2 anchor, Erica Simon ABC 13’s weekend and morning anchor and NTV Houston’s newcomer Paige Hubbard, who was the youngest in the room.

“I’m so grateful to have a seat at the table, to be surrounded by so many talented professionals,some who I have watched growing up and others who have greatly impacted my career; it’s a blessing,” said Paige Hubbard who is in her early 20’s.

The news industry is a 24/7 business that comes with the demanding rigorous work schedules. Those who attened the brunch were happy to have a break.

From the outside looking in journalism careers seem glamorous and yes, while some days it is, it is also an industry that requires a lot of hard work and dedication. Journalist often cover breaking news, work on holidays,and even their birthdays.

Even though is a demanding career, most of them say they couldn’t Imagine doing anything else.
