At least 79 die as overloaded ferry sinks in Iraq’s Tigris river

Grieving for the Mosul ferry disaster victims, bereaved people on Friday (March 22) gathered at a morgue in Mosul in the hope of finding their bodies.

At least 79 died when the overloaded vessel capsized and sank on the Tigris river on Thursday (March 21), medical sources told Reuters.

One man blamed the negligence of the authorities for the accident and called for the search for the bodies to be extended.

Most of the casualties on the ferry were women and children who could not swim, said the head of Mosul’s Civil Defence Authority Husam Khalil.

He said the ferry had been loaded to several times its capacity. Five ferry workers were arrested on Thursday, security sources said.

The boat was ferrying people to a man-made island used as a recreational area by families, according to one witness.
