Heavily armed officers from the New York Police Department (NYPD) guarded mosques across the city as a precaution.
In New Zealand, a gunman shot dead 49 people and wounded more than 40 at two mosques, some as they were kneeling at prayer.
In speaking to reporters, New York Police Department (NYPD) Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence & Counterterrorism, John Miller, noted both the increased vigilance as well as a clear coast thus far.
“Mosques and masjids will be a special focus today and for the next few days until we understand the breath of the details of the attack, any connections or nexus to the United States, or New York,” he said. “So far we’re not seeing that,” said Miller.
