Thousands of Pakistanis gather to pay tribute to Christchurch victims

Thousands of Pakistanis on Friday (April 12) paid tribute to the 50 victims of the Christchurch mosque attack last month.

Dressed in white, they gathered on a huge green area in the Jhang district in Punjab to form an image of the Al Noor mosque, one of the attack sites, amid chants of “Islam is Peace.”

A second group, also dressed in stark white, formed the words “Islam is peace” nearby.

The tribute was organized by the Muslim Institute, an NGO aimed at promoting peace and stability in the Muslim world.

On March 15, a gunman stormed two mosques shooting dead 50 people in New Zealand’s worst mass shooting. Nine were of Pakistani origin. One, Naeem Rashid, was posthumously given an award for bravery by Pakistan after he apparently tried to tackle the gunman before being shot.
