India’s Modi confident of returning to power with full majority

“The new government will resume its work as soon as possible. We will make the decisions one by one and move forward,” Modi added, speaking on stage with Amit Shah, chief of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata party.

Modi won a surprise majority in 2014 with his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), riding a wave of anger over perceived graft by the Congress party, which has governed India for the majority of the seven decades after the end of British rule in 1947.

Congress President and India’s main opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, also present at the news conference, took the chance to slam Modi for failing to give India a new vision that him and his party identified has failing long ago, he said.

The last phase of India’s mammoth elections is due on May 19. Votes will be counted on May 23.
