Judge rules that Proposition B is unconstitutional

The Houston Firefighters Union said the court's ruling on Prop B is a "disappointment," but they will continue to fight for what's right

A major breakthrough has happened in the city of Houston after a state district judge ruled that Proposition B is unconstitutional.

This essentially ends the tug of war between the city of Houston and HFD along with all its functioning parts.

Prop B was the voter-approved measure that would have allowed Houston firefighters to have the same pay raise as police officers.

The Houston Firefighters Union said the court’s ruling on Prop B is a “disappointment,” but they will continue to fight for what’s right.

The ruling came in a lawsuit brought in November by the Houston Police Officers’ Union, in which the group contended that the charter amendment conflicts with the Texas Constitution.

Mayor Turner said that firefights do deserve pay raises and he looks forward working with them to find a solution within the city’s budget.

Turner also said that there will be no need to lay off anyone and the fire cadets that were laid off can be brought back and sworn in.
