Indian journalist assaulted by railway police in Uttar Pradesh

An Indian journalist said on Tuesday (June 11) he was assaulted by railway police while covering the derailment of a goods trains in India's northern Uttar Pradesh state.

A video recorded at the scene shows Government Railway Police officers beating Amit Kumar, who was later locked in a jail cell.

Uttar Pradesh police suspended two of its officers while it launched an investigation, Deputy Inspector General with Moradabad’s Government Railway Police Subhash Dubey said.

The 2019 World Press Freedom Index ranks India 140 out of 180 countries and regions.
