Blast at Kabul University kills at least 8, injures 33

A blast hit the southern gate of Kabul University in the Afghan capital Friday morning, killing at least eight people and wounding 33 others, according to a spokesperson for the public health ministry.

The Kabul police said in a statement that the blast, which happened at around 07:20, was caused by an improvised explosive device placed outside the university.

Some witnesses said the explosion set a vehicle on fire. Another source said the bomb exploded as students gathered at the university’s southern gate waiting to take examinations.

“I was only five meters away from the blast site. The sound of the explosion was horrible. There were a lot of dead and wounded people around me. Some said at least six people were killed. I myself saw four bodies and helped remove two of them from the blast site,” said Naqibullah, a witness.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast.
