The bus with 59 passengers onboard was on its way to the eastern city of Lahore from the northwestern region of Swat when it crashed on the motorway, local media reported. Survivors told reporters the bus was speeding on the wet and slippery road when it skidded and fell into a gorge.
Police and rescue teams transported victims to the nearby hospitals in Hasanabdal and Taxila. Doctors told local media that the death toll might rise further as at least five of the injured were in critical condition.
Road accidents, common in Pakistan, are often caused by untrained drivers, bad roads and poorly maintained vehicles.
