Trump tweets congratulations to Britain’s Johnson following leadership win

U.S. president Donald Trump tweeted his congratulations to incoming British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday (July 23), after Johnson won the Conservative leadership battle with 66% of the party member vote.

Outgoing prime minister Theresa May and Johnson’s leadership rival Jeremy Hunt also tweeted their congratulations to the U.K’s new leader, who will officially become prime minister on Wednesday (July 24).

Iranian foreign affairs minister Javad Zarif congratulated Johnson, but also took the opportunity to condemn the May government’s seizure of Iranian oil.

Johnson has agreed with Trump’s statement that Iran must be constrained. Speaking during Conservative party hustings in June, Johnson said that vigilance was key, as Iran’s government “are bent on all sorts of mischief in the region.”
