‘Chap Olympiad’ celebrates British eccentricities with tea and cucumber sandwich contests

The annual “Chap Olympiad” event in southern England had participants trying to outdo each other by not spilling tea while riding a bicycle, throwing cucumber sandwiches and hopping while holding a glass of gin and tonic.

In “picnic vaulting”, contestants had to use two walking canes to vault over a couple taking a picnic on the croquet lawn, without causing injury or knocking over their drinks.

The idea behind the event is to test “gentlemanly” skills, organiser Gustav Temple said.

The contest was postponed by a day to Sunday (August 11) due to high winds.
