Frantic mother tries to stop Russian priest from violently baptising baby

A violent baptism rite, caught on camera in a Russian church on Saturday (August 10), shocked both Orthodox believers and non-religious people, prompting a service ban for the excessively zealous priest.

The footage shows a one-year-old boy crying while Father Foty uses force to immerse him in a baptismal font and fended off attempts from a frantic mother trying to take the baby away from him.

In an interview with local news station Channel 5, Father Foty said the mother was overreacting and unfamiliar with the ritual and that he was performing baptism according to church rules.

On Sunday (August 11) Russian Orthodox Church, in its website, published an official apology followed by a statement that Father Foty had been banned from performing his duties for one year.
