Hong Kong protesters clash with police outside airport

Violent clashes broke out at Hong Kong airport on Tuesday (August 13) as riot police arrived to disperse protesters.

One police officer was beaten by demonstrators and fell to the floor before being helped to their feet by fellow officers.

The officer in question pulled out a gun during the skirmish and pointed it at the protesters but no shots were fired.

The Airport Authority said in a statement that a public assembly had blocked passageways to the airport’s restricted area, blocking passengers from proceeding to immigration.

Hong Kong’s Airport Authority said on Tuesday operations at the city’s international airport had been “seriously disrupted” by a public assembly, as riot police moved in and used pepper spray against protesters, some of whom blocked police vehicles.
