At least 12 dead after tourist boat capsizes in India – local media

At least 12 people were killed on Sunday and more than a dozen others went missing after a tourist boat capsized in Godavari River in south India, according to local media.

The boat was carrying more than 60 people including passengers and crew as it capsized near Devipatnam village in Andhra Pradeshs state, reports said.

Several tourists were rescued by the personnel from India’s National Disaster Response Force and a Navy helicopter was pressed into service to help rescuers.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the accident.

“Extremely pained by the capsizing of a boat in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Rescue operations are currently underway at the site of the tragedy,” Modi said in a tweet.

Andhra Pradesh State Chief Jagan Mohan Reddy announced an ex gratia payment of 1,000,000 rupees ($14,000) for bereaved families, local media reported.

The tragedy comes days after 11 people lost their lives in a similar boat incident in India’s central Bhopal city.
