Messi big doubt for Champions League opener

Coach Ernesto Valverde will be hoping that the calf injury to Lionel Messi, which has seen the Argentine miss the start of the season, will have improved to allow him to play some part of the match. If not, Valverde may be looking towards 16-year-old Ansu Fati who scored on his first start for Barcelona in a 5-2 win against Valencia on Saturday (September 14), also setting up the second goal for Frenkie de Jong.

Barcelona, last season’s beaten semi-finalists after going out to eventual winners Liverpool in a dramatic 4-3 aggregate defeat, face a tough group this season that also includes Serie A leaders Inter Milan.

Barcelona have not enjoyed a great start to La Liga this season with two wins from their opening four matches which included a defeat to Atletic Bilbao in the opening round.
