Pakistan ready for historic first cricket test on home soil since 2009

Pakistan’s first test match on home soil since 2009, which starts against Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi on Wednesday (December 11), is “very good for the Pakistani nation”, Pakistan captain Azhar Ali said on Tuesday (December 10).

Pakistan host Sri Lanka in a two-match series, their first tests on home soil since the 2009 militant attack on Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore which left six security personnel and two civilians dead and six players injured.

Other teams refused to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns and the side were forced to play home tests at neutral venues in the United Arab Emirates.

The matches are part of the World Test Championship in which Pakistan are yet to get off the mark after two innings defeats in Australia. Sri Lanka are fourth with 60 points from two matches.

Sri Lanka are coached by Mickey Arthur, who led Pakistan for three years before taking up his role with Sri Lanka last week.

Sri Lankan Test skipper Dimuth Karunaratne said having Arthur as their coach is a “big advantage”. Arthur was appointed the head coach for the Sri Lanka team last week.
