Two children were shot dead as they played in the snow on Sunday morning (December 1) in Minneapolis, before the gunman fled into a house in a possible hostage situation, according to a police spokesman.
“This is a horrific scene…it’s tough to put into words,” Minneapolis Police spokesman John Elder told reporters as SWAT personnel surrounded the home, guns drawn.
Investigators believe the incident is a domestic incident. Neighbors were evacuated for their safety as police continued to try to make contact with the suspect.
Officers arrived on scene around 10 a.m. local time (1600 GMT) where they found two boys suffering from gunshot wounds.
They were swiftly moved to a squad car where officers determined they were dead, according to local media reports.
Elder described the boys as “younger than teenagers”.
