Indian actress Deepika Padukone, Chinese dancer and transgender celebrity Jin Xing, Australian artist Lynette Wallworth and U.S. artist Theaster Gates were honoured in Davos on Monday (January 20) as the 2020 edition of the annual World Economic Forum (WEF) kicked off in the Swiss alpine town.
The four were presented with the event’s Crystal Awards for their “outstanding artistic achievement” and “leadership”.
The Crystal Awards, in their 26th year, are awarded every year by Hilde Schwab, the wife of WEF founder Klaus Schwab.
Padukone was awarded for her leadership in raising mental health awareness, Gates for his leadership in creating sustainable communities, Jin for her leadership in shaping inclusive cultural norms, and Wallworth for her leadership in creating inclusive narratives, Schwab said.
The honourees gave impassioned speeches, Padukone sharing personal details of her battle with anxiety and depression, Jin, who underwent sex reassignment surgery in 1995, urging the audiences to “be different” and Wallworth calling for strong leadership to tackle climate change.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the WEF, an annual gathering of global business and political leaders.
