A teen that accidentally shot her nephew appears in court

HOUSTON, TX – A teen responsible for the accidental shooting of her 10-year-old nephew appeared in court Thursday morning for her preliminary hearing. On Tuesday, around 4:17 p.m. Caitlyn Smith, 19 was at Chisholm Trail Apartment complex with her nephew when she accidentally shot him.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the child was left in critical condition and is currently being treated at Memorial Hermann Hospital.

On the matter of Smith, he said,

“The female indicated that she retrieved that weapon to take a picture, and in the course of taking pictures, the gun went off and struck the child.”

Investigators are still working to see who is to be held accountable for the gun itself, but their main focus is making sure the young boy recovers first.

Smith’s bail was set to $20,000. She is also being ordered to avoid contact with the child.
